Hashkama: Wake Up to Reality
One hears various reasons why people voted for Boris Johnson in the last election – his intelligence, his ability to do Brexit, you hear some of his colleagues mention his ability to win elections. The one word that is never mentioned is wisdom. We never hear about Boris being a wise man. The reason for that is, he probably isn’t very wise. Boris Johnson has gone from being Mr Popular to Mr Resign!
The Prime Minister has an enemy, a wounded animal by the name of Dominic Cummings; a man whose pride has been hurt. Dominic Cummings, in his going, appears to have put forward allegations with the intention of bringing Boris down. Metaphorically speaking, he is building the gallows from which to hang the Prime Minister. This is not the first time in political intrigue that someone has been set-up for the gallows, or worse. Haman, another proud man, and a grand vizier in the Persian empire under King Ahasuerus (Xerxes), plotted the downfall of Mordecai in the book of Esther (Esther Ch’s 3 to 8). Then there were the satraps setting a trap in the Book of Daniel. They schemed together and encouraged the king to make a new law; a law that would eventually lead to the death of Daniel, at least, that was the intention. The law was not for the good of the king, the people, or the empire; it was introduced, by the king who didn’t understand that he was being set-up, and didn’t realise that the intention of the new law was to get rid of Daniel. The king had been trapped by his councillors because the royal decree was irrevocable, as the councillors pointed out to him (Daniel 6:15), and Daniel was thrown to the lions. In the book of Esther, it was Haman the accuser that was hanged on the gallows prepared for Mordechai (Esther 7:10). Here, because of his faith in God, Daniel was delivered by God from certain destruction, and it was those that had slandered him that were chewed up by the ferociously hungry lions (Daniel 6:24).
I am interested that Dominic Cummings has, allegedly, so many photos of the parties that he claims Boris knew about or attended. According to reports, Cummings had advised the Prime Minister that the parties would be in breach of the Covid rules; advice that Boris Johnson apparently casually brushed aside. Yet Cummings allegedly took photos and held onto them until an opportune time. It is a wonderful time for the Prime Minister’s enemies, Labour and Conservative, foreign and home-bred. Some are calling for his immediate resignation. Was the plan in the beginning to party so that evidence could be gathered that would incriminate the Prime Minister? Was it a cunning scheme by some to bring the Prime Minister down, by getting him to put the noose around his own neck? Nebuchadnezzar was no fool, yet he fooled himself into making a foolish law. The law would go on to be used to accuse, with the intention of destroying the Jews – Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego – You can read this in Daniel Ch.3. There was yet another plot in the time of Darius in Daniel Ch.6, where the administrators, satraps, advisers and governors, devised a plan to get rid of Daniel. The whole bunch of them presented their scheme to the unsuspecting king. We like to think that this is the 21st Century, and that we are much smarter today than the numb-nuts of the past. In fact, we are just as wicked, and as disloyal, and quite possibly not as intelligent as Nebuchadnezzar was. He worked out that God is high over all, and he had the wisdom to act on that knowledge, by acknowledging God and worshipping Him. Will a Prime Minister that lacks wisdom do the same? Nebuchadnezzar was not afraid of mixing religion with politics. Today’s politicians are scared stiff of acknowledging the true God in public. God was in control while Nebuchadnezzar was giving himself all the credit (Daniel 4:29-30); God was in control when Nebuchadnezzar’s madness was made apparent to all (Daniel 4:33); and God was in control when Nebuchadnezzar came to his senses and glorified God (Daniel 4:34-37). The king was restored to his throne, honour, and splendour was returned to the king and the glory of his kingdom. It was even greater than before. You can read all about it in Daniel Ch.4.
There is an awful lot of flak to see through in this present situation. Perhaps my eyesight is not as good as it should be, and that my perspective is defective. I am simply sharing my thoughts – not because I am a Boris fan, because I am not. It is to try to understand what is really happening before our very eyes. God has allowed this scenario. Britain has many enemies, and is under attack from within and from forces without. We are also spreading our own destructive forces by joining Western leaders in such policies as ‘Net Zero’.[i] This is a policy that will cause much poverty and destruction of life. Britain has lost its way; its moral compass has broken since taking our eye off the Lord. Should Boris, and the nation, respond as Nebuchadnezzar did, God might have mercy on us; otherwise, we are rushing toward destruction. This is the reality that the Prime Minister and the nation need to return to – “I Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes towards heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honoured and glorified Him who lives forever. His dominion is an eternal dominion; His kingdom endures from generation to generation. All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as He pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back His hand or say to Him: ‘What have You done?’”
These are perilous times for the UK. Do our lives please God, or grieve God? Every breath we take, every move we make, every thought we think, and every word we speak, either affirms or denies that God is.
Blessings and shalom
