Having listened to the audio recording, I was left feeling a little troubled. I watched both the videos, which were enjoyable and challenging, so thought perhaps the session would be about acknowledgement, acceptance and celebration of each other’s gifts within God’s family. My concern about the session is that it seemed to be starting with ourselves, adding God to what we had produced and calling it prophetic. Is this bordering on ‘mindfulness’? There is no criticism intended by this comment, just a genuine desire to be in God’s will.
I too was troubled after Mondays meeting, more than a ‘little.! I have no problem with doodling but was Monday doodling or something else?
I too had thought of the mindfulness type colourings as well as its relationship to Buddhism having been in a house group where one member didn’t attend as ended up going to visit the Buddhist temple.
I looked on a search engine for mindfulness and was shocked at some of the pictures that came up clearly Buddhist, Hindu gods and had random words on some of them.
I do believe Father can use any means to speak to us but could not get the connection between the children as subject of videos and bible believing Christian’s who learn to forgive others no matter what was said and done.
I have been pondering too on why I felt so uncomfortable on Monday, so thank you Betty for your comments. There was perhaps a feeling of New Age, Mindfulness or the Contemplative about it all for me, and I also couldn’t quite understand the use of the word Prophetic in this context?
I absolutely agree that children differ in their strengths and abilities, and different approaches to learning suit different children to achieve their own best – but I couldn’t understand the connection with this to the artistic exercise that followed?
What Scriptures were given to support these ideas?
I was glad to see your post Betty, thanks. Many of us have experienced problems with indulgent church and with ‘prophecy’ incorrectly discerned from spiritual blessings, feelings, intuition or something else.
In terms of the drawing, I thought Monday was facilitated well (especially given it was on zoom) and I know that e.g. unwell children have been able to draw their own diagnosis through art therapy where the medical model had reached an impasse. If truth can come in, so does the light.
My concern is that the church is more interested in the bride than the bridegroom. If amelioration of difficulty becomes our goal we end up with what we seek!
Steve has a track record in selecting the right conference theme and it will be interesting to see how this one works out!
Thanks for taking the time to respond to my post Jeremy. It really is good to be able to question and debate issues without any offence being intended or taken. Flockdown is too precious to allow it to suffer the same fate of many fellowships whereby we sometimes soak up everything like sponges without question, disagree and cause division, or disagree and leave without discussion. I totally agree about Steve’s track record but I am also aware that we are in a spiritual battle so really do need to be ‘wise (or crafty, according to translation) as serpents and gentle as doves’ Shalom.
Thanks, Jeremy, for your vote of confidence. Thanks to all of you for your comments, as healthy debate is always welcome. We have been following the discussion and, at the outset, we realise that the main problem is one of communication – we could probably have done a better job at explaining ourselves last Monday. Although we are cancelling SP tonight, we will be meeting as a team during the week and having a follow-up meeting next Monday, so that we can address all of your concerns in open debate. All is well and all that we do is to bless the Lord 🙂
Reading Jeremy’s comment I wish I had express my thoughts in the way he has.
I have no problems with Art Therapy and was happy drawing my circles and wavy lines, it was later that I became concerned about potential wrong outcomes for the more vulnerable amongst us.
