{"id":2382,"date":"2022-07-30T10:30:50","date_gmt":"2022-07-30T09:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saltshakers.com\/?p=2382"},"modified":"2022-09-08T21:08:51","modified_gmt":"2022-09-08T20:08:51","slug":"perseverance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/saltshakers.church\/?p=2382","title":{"rendered":"Foundations F17 Perseverance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>by David Serle<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(These are accompanying notes to David&#8217;s talk at Foundations 17)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are privileged to live in what are probably the dying days of Western Civilisation. Our society has already sacrificed millions innocent lives to satisfy the \u2018gods\u2019 of this age. Will evangelical Christians be the next group to be offered up to those same \u2018gods\u2019?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look at the \u2018what\u2019 and the \u2018how\u2019 of perseverance, because the enemy\u2019s strategy is to \u2018wear out the saints\u2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Dan.7.25\">Dan.7:25<\/a> \u2013 wear out by mental affliction) and our combative strategy is to persevere \u2013 looking to Jesus, and contemplating Him, the Author and Finisher of faith (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Heb.%2012.1-3\">Heb. 12:1-3<\/a>) \u2013 the Renewed Mind filled with the Spirit, because we can\u2019t do it on our own!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to keep reminding ourselves that Jesus said: \u201cWithout Me you can do nothing\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/John%2015.5\">John 15:5<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spiritual victories are no guarantee of perseverance \u2013 think of Elijah running from Jezebel after the great victory on Mt. Carmel\u2013 or perhaps perseverance doesn\u2019t look like what we think? God then recommissions him!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Paul\u2019s testimony was: \u201cBut by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/1%20Cor.%2015.10\">1Cor. 15:10<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/2%20Cor.%206.4-10\">2 Cor. 6:4-10<\/a> But as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love; by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; through honour and dishonour, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He goes on to list his trials in <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/2%20Cor.%2011.23-28\">2 Cor. 11:23-28<\/a> but you sense his weariness in <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/2%20Tim.%204.7-18\">2 Tim. 4:7-18<\/a> \u2013 nevertheless, that section is bracketed by the crown of righteousness and his safe arrival in the heavenly kingdom \u2013 focussing on the eternal, which we will consider later on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Perseverance \u2013 what is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two Greek words or word groups, often translated by the same English words, but they have slightly different meanings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>hupomen\u014d\/ hupomon\u0113<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>hupomen\u014d To stay under (behind), that is, remain; figuratively to undergo, that is, bear (trials), have fortitude, persevere: \u2013 abide, endure, (take) patient (-ly), suffer, tarry behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>hupomon\u0113 Cheerful (or hopeful) endurance, constancy: \u2013 enduring, patience, patient continuance (waiting).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>makrothumia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lit. long passioned, Longanimity, that is, (objectively) forbearance or (subjectively) fortitude: \u2013 longsuffering, patience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This word is used as a characteristic of God <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Rom.%202.4\">Rom. 2:4<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/1%20Tim.%201.16\">1 Tim. 1:16<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/2%20Pet.%203.15\">2 Pet. 3:15<\/a> and comes in the Fruit of the Spirit <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Gal.%205.22\">Gal. 5:22<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To draw out the difference:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Hupomene endurance \u2013 what you do under trial<\/li><li>makrothumia patience &nbsp;-what you are under trial\u2013 long suffering, forbearance, fortitude<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Seen together in <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Col.%201.11\">Col. 1:11<\/a> being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all <strong>endurance<\/strong> [what you do] and <strong>patience<\/strong> [what you are] with joy;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But not in our own strength! Note that Paul says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>being strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What do we have to Persevere through?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The war with our flesh <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/1%20Pet.%204.1\">1 Pet. 4:1<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The war with the enemy <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/1%20Pet.%205.8-9\">1 Pet. 5:8-9<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Discipline <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Heb.%2012.7\">Heb. 12:7<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Heb.%2012.7\">Heb. 12:7<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Testing of our faith <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/James%201.2-5\">James 1:2-5<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Delayed fulfilment of God\u2019s promises<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Rom.%204.20\">Rom. 4:20<\/a> No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Heb.%2011.13-16\">Heb. 11:13-16<\/a> These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Heb.%2011.24-27\">Heb. 11:24-27<\/a> By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh\u2019s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Persecution and opposition<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Heb.%2010.32-34\">Heb. 10:32-34<\/a> But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you <strong>endured<\/strong> a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/2%20Tim.%202.8-12\">2 Tim. 2:8-12<\/a> \u2026 my gospel, for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! Therefore I <strong>endure<\/strong> everything for the sake of the elect \u2026 If we have died with him, we will also live with him; \u2026 if we <strong>endure<\/strong>, we will also reign with him;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Rejection and betrayal <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Heb.%2012.3\">Heb. 12:3<\/a><\/li><li>False teaching in the church <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Rev.%202.2-4\">Rev. 2:2-4<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018I know your works, your toil and your <strong>patient endurance<\/strong>, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. I know you are <strong>enduring patiently<\/strong> and bearing up for my name\u2019s sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to develop perseverance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Focus on the eternal<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Heb.%2012.2\">Heb. 12:2<\/a> Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/James%201.12\">James 1:12<\/a> Blessed is the man who <strong>remains steadfast<\/strong> under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/1%20Pet.%205.10\">1 Pet. 5:10<\/a> And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Yielded to the Holy Spirit fruit of the Spirit Gal, 5:22<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/1%20Pet.%204.14\">1 Pet. 4:14<\/a> If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Develop a spirit of excellence \u2013 self-control. Discipline<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/2%20Pet.%201.5-8\">2 Pet. 1:5-8<\/a> or this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Meditate on the Scriptures <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Ps.%201\">Psa. 1<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Dan.%209.2\">Dan. 9:2<\/a><\/li><li>Lifetime of trust \u2013 Jesus, David, Daniel<\/li><li>Lifetime of Prayer \u2013 Jesus, David, Daniel<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Lord Jesus <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Heb.%2012.1-2\"><strong>Heb. 12:1-2<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lifetime of rejection \u2013 homeless refugee whose life was sought, misunderstood by His family, rejected by the religious, political and social leaders of His day, betrayed by one of His disciples, denied by another, deserted by them all when it counted. Think of the struggle in Gethsemane \u2013 the battle of Calvary was fought on the praying field of Gethsemane (Arthur Matthews) \u2013 for the joy set before Him!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>David<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of some of the Psalms \u2013 cries of agony and despair. But he kept going \u2013 made mistakes even at the end with numbering the people -= and hangs on to God even to the end <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/2%20Sam.%2023.1-7\">2 Sam. 23:1-7<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Daniel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perseverance is the work of a lifetime Daniel ch. 6. He\u2019s 80+ years old at this time; taken captive by an invading power while still a teenager, schooled for the Babylonian civil service which tried, unsuccessfully, to educate worship of Jahweh out of him (where worship was a lifestyle). He had lived through the demise of Babylon, serving at least 3 of its kings at the highest levels; now in service to the new world power, Medo-Persia; has realised from the writings of Jeremiah that the 70 years captivity is about to expire (ch.9 comes before ch. 6 chronologically) and is about to see his people restored to their land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First among equals \u2013 3 presidents \u2013 over the whole kingdom \u2013 \u2018because an excellent spirit was in him\u201d. And not for the first time! 5:12,14 just a year or so earlier; some years earlier 4:9; in fact, track right back to the beginning 1:4,19-20 To act always to please God and not man <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Dan.%201.8\">Dan. 1:8<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was in the lions\u2019 den before ever he spent time with the furry variety! Was the object of persecution because of his faith by the cultural Marxists\/woke-ists of his day! <a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Dan.%206.5\">Dan. 6:5<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>v.10 When he knew that the decree had been issued, he ran away and hid himself, kept his head below the parapet, after all it\u2019s only 30 days? NO, he did what he had always done \u2013 opened his windows toward Jerusalem, three times a day and prayed as he had before!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018battle\u2019 with the lions was won through a lifetime of training his mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now we\u2019re in the same situation as Daniel \u2013 facing lions at every turn in our society \u2013 social, sexual, political. Paul described this type of conflict as fighting \u2018with wild beasts at Ephesus\u2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/1%20Cor%2015.32\">1 Cor 15:32<\/a>, quote from Plato!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Col.%203.12\">Col. 3:12<\/a> Put on then, as God\u2019s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Rom.%2013.14\">Rom. 13:14<\/a> Put on the Lord Jesus Christ, Who is our armour!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by David Serle (These are accompanying notes to David&#8217;s talk at Foundations 17) We are privileged to live in what are probably the dying days [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[4,21],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v15.7 -
